March Recap

I’m learning something in my old age.  Time flies when you’re old.

I was checking prescriptions yesterday.  I was all like “Whoa.  Trying to fill your narcotics super early there, Mr. Patient.  Last filled on March 1st.  Totally not getting that 3 weeks early.”  I then realized that it was April and Mr. Patient was not abusing his prescription drugs.  Nothing gets past this pharmacist.

It’s time to look back on what we discussed on the blog in March.  March was pretty quiet.  April is going to be as well. I’m not going to lie.  I’m just hanging out until our after tax season vacation (We’re headed to Florida. Yay sun!).  But after vacation, our house had better look out.

Past monthly recaps: January, February

Did you have a favorite March project?  Anyone else just hanging out until vacation?  Where is your next vacation destination?

Amazing Monster Cookies

I had monthly craft night last Thursday.  I always bring dessert.  Why?  Because everyone else brings vegetables so I have to make sure there is something I can eat.  I’m that girl.

Monster Cookies are one of my favorites.  They remind me of college.  The good parts of college.  The overeating of buffet food.  The 3 hours naps.  The only having to be productive for 2 hours on Fridays.  I attended the University of Northern Iowa before pharmacy school (at the University of Iowa).  UNI had THE best Monster Cookies.  I have since been on a quest to find a delicious monster cookie recipe.  Consider it checked off my life list.

Amazing Monster Cookies

These cookies are a deliciously soft peanut butter cookie stuffed with chocolate chips and M&Ms. I don’t know how you can possibly go wrong with that combination.

Ike was not pleased when he wasn’t allowed to sample them.

Spring Before 2013 003

Monster Cookies (makes 2 dozen)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter (softened to room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 and 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup quick oats
  • 3/4 cup M&Ms
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugars together on medium speed for about 3 minutes. Mix in the peanut butter, egg, and vanilla (in that order). Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Slowly mix in the baking soda and flour. Don’t  over mix. Fold in the quick oats, M&Ms, and chocolate chips.
  3. Rolls balls of dough (about 2 Tablespoons of dough per ball) onto baking sheet. Press a few extra M&Ms on top for looks, if preferred.  (Which I did.  Because this girl likes pretty cookies.)
  4. Bake for 9-10 minutes.  The cookies will appear undone. Slightly press down the baked cookies with the back of a spoon because the cookies will only spread slightly in the oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Cookies will firm up as they cool.
  5. Store cookies covered at room temperature for up to 1 week. (These freeze well.)

Spring Before 2013 011

I took the leftovers to the family this week-end.  They are toddler approved.  My niece screamed “COOKIES!!” Followed by “Aunt Chelle makes good cookies.  Aunt Chelle come to my house with cookies.”  I’m glad I wasn’t the only one that approved.

Are you a Monster Cookie fan?  Any foods remind you of those good ol’ college days?

Spring and The Home Depot Garden Club

Spring?  Spring? Where are you?  Oh, that’s right.  You are never going to arrive in Iowa.  Silly me.

The local weather reporters are entertaining us with talk of temperatures in the 80’s by the middle of the month. What a great April Fool’s joke silly weather people!

The talk of 80 degrees has me pondering the outdoors.

Spring Before 2013 Outside Before

A yard full of green grass.  Dirt on my hands.  Flowers blooming.  I. Can’t. Wait.

I know that I need to be patient and do some planning before any of that can happen. I’m horrible at planning ahead. I like to dive right in. I recently became a member of the Home Depot's Garden Club.

The Garden Club has some great benefits. By signing up I can save $5 off my next garden purchase of $50. They will also send me lots of e-mail coupons, garden ideas and info on new products.

One of my favorite features of the Home Depot's Garden Club is the regional to-do list. Select the zone you live in and you are supplied with a monthly outdoor to-do list. I love checking things off of lists. It’s a sickness! We live in Zone 5 and part of our March to-do list includes pruning woody plants. Our little shrubs are getting out of control after 4 years of growth. Better get on that!

Spring Before 2013 shrubs

Do you think removing Christmas lights should be part of the outdoor to-do list?  Nah, me neither.

We have lots of projects that we need to tackle outdoors this Spring. We have multiple areas that still need flowers. The Garden Center will be an excellent resource for finding plants that grow well in our zone. We need assistance finding plants for a shady area and a partly sunny area. We also have deer that live in our backyard that like to eat our plants. We have to be selective with the plants that we purchase. I’m all about wildlife living in my backyard but I’m not all about feeding them gourmet meals with my hard earned money.

Our back patio is quite sad.  We need color.  We need hanging baskets.  We need help.  (Extra points if you spot a doggy in the window.)

BFFs and Why You Should Blog

BFF has a new meaning.  Blog Friends Forever.

I kill myself with corniness.

All kidding aside, I hung out with two of my favorite blog buddies last week-end (Cindy (The Flipping Couple) and Kim (NewlyWoodwards))  I’m still trying to recover from lack of sleep. Even though we went to bed at 10:30.  We’re party animals. I think it’s my “introverts get energy sapped from hanging out with others” theory. Yes, that.

Here’s the only picture of the three of us.  You know, the one where I already look like I’ve drank a pitcher of sangria and spilled it down myself.  (I had a small issue opening some club soda.  Small.  It definitely did not spray all over my kitchen.  Definitely not.  I should probably have my own Food Network show.)

IMG_20130323_202501

If you would have asked me three years ago if two strangers from the internet would be two of my favorite people in the world.  I would have laughed at you.  I’ve only hung out with Cindy three times yet she feels like someone I’ve known forever.  I currently spend more time with Kim than I do my husband.  If you think about it though, when you read about people’s lives on a daily basis you almost know more about their current lives than the real life friends you only see once a month.  Kind of strange.

Blog friends are great because they get you.  If you don’t blog, you don’t have a complete understanding of how weird the world of blogland is.  It’s hard to explain but it’s like you become part of this parallel universe.  It’s totally cool to Instagram your dinner.  It’s almost rude not to.

Blog friends know what you should serve them for breakfast. I read Kim’s mind.  She totally didn’t demand baked donuts. I fed Henry paper.

IMG_20130323_101731

Blog friends will pose for ridiculous Instagram photos without hesitation.  (P.S. She totally bought those.)

IMG_20130323_180609

Blog friends don’t mind when your dog humps their baby.  True story. I was mortified.  Kim laughed.  Henry laughed.  I booked an obedience lesson.

Moral of this post.  Start blogging.  Seriously.  You will meet so many amazing people and there are a lot of fun opportunities that arise if you work at it. (I have some fun opportunities ahead in the next few months.  Outdoor projects.  Reclaimed barn wood.  Flowers.  Navy paint.  Tile.  I can’t wait!)

I truly believe everyone has a story to tell.  My life is seriously not that exciting but you all keep stopping back.  So I keep writing.  Share yours!

Do you have questions about blogging? Ask them in the comments. I’m an open book.

How to Make Curtains (DIY)

Do you all remember the great stencil debate of 2013? You know, the debate from 3 weeks ago.  How could you forget? The results are in.

image

I totally listened to you all.  Mainly because your votes aligned with my laziness.  Curtains for the win.

craft room curtains

Actually, I’m still debating what to do with that wall.  I’m milking this craft room like Katie Bower is milking that kitchen of hers.  (Give me 3 1/2 more weeks until tax season ends and my carpenter returns.)  I might paint the walls grey.  I might paint them grey chevron.  I might leave them white and get on with it.  Only time will tell my dear readers.

Making curtains is easy. Like monkeys could do it in their sleep easy. But people pin crap like this on Pinterest all of the time so enjoy my blown out curtain photo.  Also, the word curtain begins to look really funny when you type it a lot.  Maybe it’s just looks funny after checking 250 prescriptions.

DIY curtains

Step 1.  Buy fabric.  I purchased a little over 5 yards.  This beautiful ikat-esque fabric is from Hobby Lobby.  Be sure to have a 40% off coupon.

Step 2.  Cut your fabric to the length that you would like your curtain panels.

Step 3.  Hem the edges of all sides.  Use whatever seam allowance you would like.  Go with the flow, man.

Step 4.  Hang the curtains from cute little curtain holder doo-hickeys.  (This is why I’m a pharmacist and not a professional home decor blogger.)

craft room curtains 030

Step 5. Enjoy.  Show those monkeys who is boss.  Ike totally is.

Have you made curtains?  Are you sad that your coral chevron didn’t win?  Are you as bored with the craft room as Ike is?  He votes that a dog bed is the next project.  Poor thing needs a place to sleep while I craft.

Instagram Display From Old Crib Spring

It’s no secret that I’m addicted to Instagram.  (Feel free to follow decorandthedog for many pictures of Ike, snow and the food I eat.)

Most people ponder the meaning of life.  I have been pondering a way to display some of my 835 Instagram photos.  I’m deep.

The answer came to me while thrifting with two of my favorite people, Cindy and Kim, this past week-end.  I spotted an old crib frame and I knew that it needed to be mine. It was so meant to be that I waited for a good 10 minutes for the owner of the shop to return to accept my money.  Only in Iowa.

Instagram Photo Display Using an Old Crib Spring

This project is super easy.  The hard part is locating an old crib spring.  You could easily use a new one as well.  I had pondered painting this one but I’m a sucker for the rustic look.  It works perfectly above my craft room sewing table. I like this so much I wish I had a place for it in our main living area.

Instagram Photo Display Using Old Crib Spring

I used an app called Printicular that allowed me to print my photos at Walgreens.  There are many other on-line sources for printing. I have zero patience and wanted my photos fast.  The photos were ready in an hour by using the app.  (Use coupon code PARTNER25 for 25% off.  This isn’t a sponsored post.  I just like the app.)  I thought the photo quality was great.  I’ll definitely use Printicular again.

I purchased some small clothespins from Hobby Lobby to use to attach the photos to the bedframe.  I love that this display allows me to easily switch out the photos.  Something about me liking to change decor a lot.  I might paint the clothespins someday.  Call me maybe.

Instagram Photo Display 019

Nate helped me hang from the wall with some L-brackets.  He found it helpful to drill a small hole to the top of the frame.  He placed a screw through the hole to attach the L-bracket.  This helps to securely anchor the spring to the wall.  Safety is always important.  Especially when I will be changing pictures often.

Instagram Photo Display 017

The display makes me so happy.  It’s such a great way to display many great memories.  I have photos of big trips to Costa Rica and the Grand Canyon.  There are photos of of friends and family.  And there are more than plenty photos of the Ike man.

One step closer to finally finishing my silly craft room!

Are you an Instagram addict?  Do you display your photos?  If so, how?

Work Your Wardrobe

Today I have a public service announcement for you.

Use caution when meeting people from the internet.

Terrifying things could happen.  You could be mugged.  You could be murdered.  You could also be suckered into modeling for this internet person’s new fashion blog.

Like the time Kim (NewlyWoodwards) started Work Your Wardrobe.  Work Your Wardrobe is a fashion blog for the working woman.

image

Today she frightened yours truly into posing for said blog.

DecorandtheDog3

All joking aside, Work Your Wardrobe is a great resource for affordable outfit inspiration.  Kim started this website for:

  • The woman who wants to look put together every day at work but refuses to pay $180 for a blouse.
  • The woman who prefers classic pieces to overly-trendy.
  • The woman who wants to look young, but is a bit out of the realm of the juniors section.
  • The woman who works to live. Not the other way around.

Work Your Wardrobe has many contributors (aka other bloggers she frightened into modeling).  It’s a fun way to see a different side of many of your favorite DIY bloggers! The blog is new but I am really enjoying the different styles represented on the blog.

Head on over to Work Your Wardrobe and leave sweet comments make fun of my modeling skills.

Off to practice fashion blogger poses for my next outfit feature.  Look out Iowa Fashion Week!

What are your wardrobe staples?  Which fashion blogger pose should I use for the next outfit?  Did you check out Iowa Fashion Week? I’m still laughing weeks later.

I’m trying to get more active on Google+.  Let’s be circle buddies! Circle me here!

Edge Painted Chair

Things you should know about me:

1. I can’t rollerskate.

2. I like butter on chocolate Pop-Tarts.

3. I’m a chicken when it comes to decorating.

Remember these chairs I picked up while doing some birthday thrifting?

thrift store chairs

I really wasn’t appalled by their honey oak appearance.  I was just appalled by it in my craft room.  My first reaction was to paint them white.  Many of you suggested coral.  I like coral. But white is safe. Coral is brave.  And colorful.  And scary.  (See #3 above.)

So in true Michelle fashion, I painted the chairs white.  And they were boring.

I guess even chicken girl needs some color every now and then. But not too much color.  That’s frightening. So I comprised.

Edge Painted Chair

I painted the edges coral (Sherwin Williams Dishy Coral like my button).

Whoa, Right?  So. Much. Color.  I’m wild.

I was inspired by those doors with only the edges painted.  I’m totally too chicken to paint a door edge but a chair edge I can handle.

Edge Painted Craft Room Chairs

Edge Painted Chair Coral and White

Just the right amount of color for this decorating hen.

Now I need to get to work on some art for above that sewing table!  I might add a little something something to the back of those chairs one of these days.  I just need to gather my courage to do so.

What do you think of the colored edges?  Are you a decorating chicken?  Any fellow butter on Pop-Tarts lovers?

5 Tips For A Dog Friendly Mudroom

I think a lot of home bloggers dream of their homes being featured in a magazine.  I know that was a dream of mine.  And now it’s a reality.

Ike and his High Desert Dog Feature

Decor and the Dog in High Desert Dog

Decor and the Dog Feature in High Desert Dog

Okay, so my dream didn’t involve our home in a dog magazine.  High Desert Dog to be exact.  None the less, it’s still pretty cool.  I would be lying if I thought my blog would be as successful without the Ike man.  The editor at High Desert Dog was great to work with.  The current issue of the magazine has some great articles like “Is Your Dog a Good Roommate” and “Blindness in Dogs”. It’s a great resource for dog owners in the Southwest.  There are many articles about local dog parks, events, and shelter information.  Makes me wish there was something available locally for Ike and I.

The article isn’t available on-line so I thought I’d share it with you all today!  (I’d like to thank my friends Danielle and Kim for proofreading/giving suggestions during the writing process!  This biology major appreciated their English skills that I ain’t got.)

Tips for a Dog Friendly Mudroom

Five Tips for a Dog Friendly Mudroom

Dogs are a lot of things- energetic, fun-loving, and loyal. When I walk in the back door door, I know my Wire Fox Terrier, Ike, will greet me with a wagging tail and sloppy kiss. Ike’s love for me is unmatched by anyone else-besides my husband. Maybe.

Ike and I share many interests . Long walks, cuddling in blankets and peanut butter. One interest we do not share is home decorating. Ike, like many dogs, has little concern for design or style. He doesn’t care if he runs with messy paws on hardwood or linoleum. He thinks mud looks great on any wall color.

As you probably already know, decorating with dogs can be a challenge. Dogs are messy and have little regard for high-end design. Most dogs are, however, valued members of the family. It is important for a homeowner to be able to show their sense of style while still considering the needs of their pets.

A good place to begin- the mudroom. The mudroom is an excellent space for homeowners to begin decorating with their dog in mind. Mudrooms are typically informal spaces located near a back entry- a perfect place for a dog to eat dinner or have dirty paws wiped clean.

There are five important factors to consider when creating a stylish dog-friendly mudroom: walls, flooring, safety, storage, and style.

Walls:

Choose satin paint for your mudroom walls. Dogs drool. Dogs shake water on walls on rainy days. Walls painted with satin paint are much easier to clean than walls painted with flat paint. To truly design the
mudroom with your dog in mind, consider painting the walls yellow, blue or grey. These are the only colors that dogs are able to see. Currently, greys are a popular color in home decor.

Flooring:

Choose a durable, scratch-resistant floor for a mudroom. Ceramic tile is an excellent choice because it is easy to clean, difficult to scratch and resistant to most animal stains. There are many great tile options available to fit almost any decor. Hardwood flooring would be your next best option. Hardwood floors are easy to clean but are easily scratched by larger dogs. If hardwood floors are your choice, choose a light to medium finish. Low gloss or distressed woods are less likely to show pet scratches. Regular grooming of your pet’s nails will also aid in keeping wood floors looking their best. Carpet is not recommended as it is difficult to clean and absorbs pet odors. If you choose carpet, consider carpet tiles which are easy to replace.

Safety:

Organize your dog-friendly mudroom to make it free of clutter. Often, the mudroom ends up being a catch-all space for towels, shoes, plastic bags and purses. Dogs love to chew on things that they shouldn’t. Design your mudroom so as to minimize the amount of opportunities for a dog to ingest something they should not or injure themselves. An important part of a safe mudroom is plenty of storage.

Storage:

A mudroom is a great place to store your dog’s belongings. Keep in mind that you will need a place to store a dog’s leash, food, treats, towels, bones, medications and paperwork. A closet is a great place to
store items like medications that should be kept out of the pet’s reach. Baskets on shelves are an inexpensive solution for storing dog toys and treats. Vintage egg crates are a great looking storage option for dog toys. Keep food sealed in a cool and dry location. Store towels in a place where they are easy to access after a trip outside. I also recommend storing leashes within easy reach. A special hook next to your coat is an easy and stylish solution for leash storage. Store food and water dishes underneath
a mudroom bench to keep them out of the way of the humans while remaining easily accessible for your dog.

Decor and the Dog Mudroom

Decor and the Dog Mudroom Bench

Decor and the Dog Mudroom Leash Hook

Style:

Can you have a beautiful pet and a beautiful house? Absolutely. It is important to keep your personal style in mind while decorating your home and mudroom. Your mudroom doesn’t have to be plastered with dogs bones and “woof” signs. You can paint the walls a color to please your dog and choose your favorite color as an accent color. Or vice versa. If you are opposed to tile in your home, choose hardwood instead. Storage baskets or containers are available in a wide range of colors and materials to match any style. Have a custom portrait of your pet made to use as wall art. A less expensive option would be framing favorite family photos or photos of your dog as a puppy.

Dogs may not care about home decor trends but that doesn’t mean that dog owners can’t. Keeping these simple tips in mind, you can take a purely functional and boring mudroom and turn it into a room everyone can be proud of. And this is something on which man and man’s best friend can agree.

What tips do you have for a pet friendly mudroom? Do you dream of your house showing up in a magazine?  Is your blog popular because of your dog/kid/etc?

Instagram Killed My Blog

Are you an Instagram addict?  I totally am.  (Feel free to follow me.  I’m decorandthedog.  Creative, right.  You can also view the photos on the right side of the blog.)

I realized the other day that I don’t blog as much about our day to day happenings as I used to.  I post them on Instagram and I’m done.   Most of you will probably thank me for that but I realized that a lot of you aren’t on Instagram.  I feel bad leaving you out of the loop on important things in my life.  Like what I ate for supper.  Or breakfast.  Or where Ike is currently sleeping in the house.  These are things that must be shared!

Here’s the hard hitting stories you may have missed if you don’t have a smart phone.  I’m fairly confident I’ll have some kind of substantial post next week.

Instagram Collage 1

It won’t stop snowing in Iowa.  You do not know how many times I have shoveled our driveway.  I then bought tulips because I needed to remind myself that Spring is around the corner.  I’m also kicking up the kettlebell workouts.  A beach vacation is 5 weeks away.  (I’ve had some questions on the kettlebells.  They are GoFit kettlebells from Target.  I am currently using the DVD that goes with them.  I started with 7 lbs. I am up to 10 lbs.  I am was also a weenie.)

Instagram Collage #2

I got a haircut.  Ike got a haircut.  I think Nate did too but we don’t see him very often.  He’s too busy crunching numbers.  I hosted monthly craft night and only have this picture to prove it.  Blogger fail.  I slaved away in the kitchen making homemade pretzels for Princess Woodward. And we made jewelry.  Ike LOVED craft night.  So many bags to dig through.  So little time.  He was sad when everyone left and decided to sleep by the door.

Instagram Collage 3

My family was in town for my birthday.  Ike thought my presents were his.  My mom enjoyed how he poses for the camera on command.  Silly Ike.  Speaking of parents, I picked some up at the thrift store.  They were a good deal.  They barely fit in the car.  We made a stop at Whitey’s (our favorite ice cream shop).  Mmm, Whitey’s.  And then I made breakfast for the family.  Just call me Susie Homemaker  (See what I’m withholding from you.  Breakfast and Whitey’s!)

Instagram Collage 4

Last week-end, the in-laws took me out for my birthday.  There was more food involved.  This time it was pizza at Crust.  Hey, look.  Nate’s short hair.  We then went to hockey. I have a love/hate relationship with our local hockey fans.  So loud and so redneck.  It’s like they are holding auditions for Duck Dynasty or Honey Boo Boo at every game.  Oh hey, here’s proof that I do work on occasion.  Pretty pills.  And last but not least.  I bought some of my favorite make-up with some birthday money.  Stila lip gloss and They’re Real Mascara.  Both are Michelle approved.  I know that is important.

Are you an Instagram addict?  Do you think Instagram is killing blogging?  Any big week-end plans?  I honestly haven’t even thought that far.
