Ad Sack Pillow Tutorial

On Monday, I mentioned that I picked up an ad sack/feed sack/grain sack (you choose the term) that I planned to make into pillows.

I've had my eye on grain sacks for the past year but I hadn't run across one that fit in with our home decor. This bag was a definite winner.  Even Ike approved and he's picky.

I had a little time to whip up one pillow before work yesterday.  Pesky day job and needing to renew my drivers license got in the way of production of pillow number two. But I find pillow number one charming enough to want to make a second!

The first step to making the ad sack pillow was to wash it.  Ike enjoyed the gross factor. I did not.  I washed it on hot and let it air dry.

While it was in the washer I tried to translate the bag to make sure it didn't say anything dirty.  It appears fine other than I don't know what casmolin is.  Who can tell me?  I haven't learned that on DuoLingo yet.

Then came the tough decision on where to cut.  I paid $15 for the ad sack so I wanted to try to get two pillows out of it to make it worth the money.  There was a lot of empty space at the top and bottom so I decided that lumbar-esque pillows would be the way to go.  I nervously cut the sack to size.

I then turned the sack so the right sides were facing in.  Using a 1/4" seam allowance, I sewed one side completely shut.  I left about a 3-4" gap on the other side.

Turn the ad sack right sides out and shove the pillow full of whatever kind of fluff you prefer.  I was hoarding this bag in my craft room.  Fill the pillow nice and full.

Hand stitch the 3-4" gap shut and you're done!

I think this pillow took me about 15 minutes to make.  Granted I did have Ike's help.

Such an angel puppy.

He approves of the new pillow even if it's not stinky and he can no longer shred stuffing.

Ike's liking it on his couch.

Whipped up any awesome pillows lately?  Who knows what casmolin is?  Anyone else addicted to DuoLingo?
