Your Questions Answered

This is lengthy.  Grab those Christmas cookies and a caffeinated beverage before you start.  You might be here awhile.  I am going to answer them all though.  (Some better than others.)

This post is about Nate and I.  A post all about Ike will be coming soon!

First, I can’t believe most of you answered all of those random questions that I posted.. I wouldn’t have played along that well.  I found most of them by Googling “weird interview questions.”

The easy stuff: Where are you from? How old are you?  Do you have babies?  Fur or human. I’m from Iowa.  I am 29. Ouch.  1 beautiful fur baby.

Using a scale of 1 to 10, rate yourself on how weird you are. You all read this thing.  I’m going with an 8.2…and I’m proud of it.

If you could be any superhero, who would it be? I would have skipped this one.  Superheroes aren’t my thang.

What do you do from 9-5? I am a pharmacist in a medical clinic for those in need.  I check about 200-250 prescriptions in that time frame.  I also education patients on their medications and answer random questions like “If I don’t take my blood pressure pills today, what will happen?” “Your blood pressure may go up.”  “That’s what I thought.  Thanks.”

If you were a cookie, what kind would you be? A chocolate chip cookie, of course.  Classic and wonderful.

Favorite TV show? Movie? TV:  I have a lot.  I love my DVR.  How I Met Your Mother, New Girl, Two Broke Girls, Whitney, Mike and Molly, Big Bang Theory, 30 Rock, Amazing Race  Movie: Elf and Thirteen Going on Thirty.  Don’t judge.

Favorite Book?  My all time favorite is Charlotte’s Web.  I also really enjoyed The Help and The Five People You Meet in Heaven,

Favorite exercise DVD:  MTV Yoga and Ripped in 30.  My preferred form of exercise is walking.  When it’s nice out, the three of us walk an hour a day 6-7 days per week.  I noticed that most of you don’t exercise.  I am going to get on my soapbox now….as a medical professional, I strongly encourage you to exercise.  Read this blog on a treadmill.  You will thank me.

A funny story about yourself.  I would have skipped this question.  I hate coming up with stuff like this.  You all are troopers.  Wait, this whole blog is a funny story about myself.

Now onto reader questions.  I seriously answered them all.  If I happened to miss yours, let me know.  Here they are in the order that they were received.

How did you come to love home improvement, decorating, etc Did you always love it?  My love for home improvement has sort of evolved over the years.   We dabbled in it at our first house.  Decorating has been more a recent thing.  I enjoy making our home pretty and I am slowly developing an eye for what looks good/suits our lifestyle.  Furniture, paint colors, and fabric ideas are always swimming around in my head.

How did you and Nate meet?   One of my good friends from high school went to college with Nate.  She kept trying to set us up.  We kept telling her “no thanks.”  We finally caved and went on our first date on 02-02-02.  Aw.

What would you do if you weren't saving the world one prescription refill at a time?  I wish I had the answer to this question.  I’ve been sort of pondering a career change but just can’t decide what would be a good fit for me.  The answer will come to me soon.  I can feel it.  Or I’ll just stick with being a pharmacist.  It’s not bad.  Just stressful.

Do you live where you grew up, or have you moved around a bit?   I grew up in Dayton, Iowa.  A town of 900 people.  No stop lights.  It’s about 3 hours from here.  My family is still there so we visit often.  We are living in the town that Nate grew up in.  His parents live a block away.

Favorite Christmas song?  I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas

Do you really still want to be my friend after reading all this about me?  Yes.

What's your next big house project?  Our office and basement are my next victims.

When are we going to meet IRL?  I had a couple of these type of questions.  I’m surprised by this.  I’m awkward.  And weirded out by meeting people from the internet.  But Kim from NewlyWoodwards didn’t chop me into tiny pieces so I am more open to the idea now.

Are you going to get another dog?  Nope.  Ike is plenty of dog for us…and our house!

Hypothetical last meal, what would it be?  Pepperoni pizza and ice cream.  Any flavor.

Travel: if you could go anywhere & cost was not an issue, where would you want to go the most?  Fiji.  I’m not sure why it’s on my list.  It just is.

Your are stuck on a desert island, and you can only bring 5 things with you (things, not people mind you), what are they?  Oh gosh.  1. Chapstick. I get all irritated when I am out of chapstick.  2. Sunscreen.  SPF 1000. Skin cancer is bad.  3. A lot of diet dew.  I need to stay awake to defend myself against predators.  4. A blanket.  I like to be covered. Even if it’s hot. 5.  A really large book collection to keep me entertained.  Can I go there now?

Favorite historical era?  I’m not smart enough to answer this question.

Favorite animal? (Besides Ike, because obviously he's got the #1 fuzzy 4legged spot in your heart)  I like elephants.  They melt my heart.  Ike and I want one.

Besides fixing up your pad, playing with Ike, and house-y stuff, what do you do for fun?  That is my fun.  I also enjoy bonding with friends and family, reading, and walking.

Is your house every messy?  Yes.  But not very often.  I’m a complete neat freak.  Clutter and mess make me nervous.

How often do you clean your house? I clean my kitchen and pick up “stuff” daily.  Waking up to a messy kitchen makes me all fidgety.  I clean the rest of the house once a week.  I try to break it up during the week.  Upstairs one night.  Downstairs the next.  This doesn’t always work with our schedules.  Other times I just do one mad spree on the week-end.  I find it easier to lightly clean once a week…it keeps me from going insane.

Do you edit all of your pics? The lighting in my house yanks it. Any suggestions on what tools to use in picnik?  I don’t edit all of my pics.  Depends on how much time I have/how lazy I am.  A lot of time I just use the “auto fix” option.  I think I’ll do a picnik tutorial soon!

Why do you live in Idaho or is it Iowa? Something with an I!  We live in Iowa for a couple of reasons.  Number 1 would be because our families are here.  Last week-end we were able to attend our niece’s 1st birthday party, visit my grandpa in the hospital (he’s doing well!), and meet our newest niece.  We spent 6 hours in the car but it’s nice being able to spend time with all of them..all in one day.  I can’t imagine how sad it would be if our nieces and nephews didn’t know us.  Number 2 is that we are Iowa loving people.  We were born and raised here.  We love the smell of dirt, green grass, and pesticides.  Owning a house was important to us and the cost of living in Iowa is very affordable!

What's your fav flavor of icecream?   I’m always a fan of chocolate brownie.

Have you ever played the game quelf? It's awesomely fun. I have never played Quelf…but it does sound fun.  My favorite game is Quirkle.

Where did you go to college?  I have a BA in biology from the University of Northern Iowa and my PharmD is from the University of Iowa.  Nate has a BA in accounting from Wartburg College.

If you had kids, what would you name them? I don’t share baby names because I’m afraid people will steal them.  The names.  Not the babies.  I guess that should be a concern as well.

Are you planning on having kids? If so, please don't get baby crazy like so many other bloggers do.  and When are you guys having kiddos? Imagine, Decor, the baby and the dog blog? That blog name is frightening.  We are still debating the kid thing.  I think the eventual answer is yes…but who knows.  We are both loving our lives right now and aren’t quite ready to change that.  Waiting to have kids has been a great decision for us.  We have both discovered things that we are passionate about in the past couple of years.  I’m not sure that I would have discovered my love for blogging/design if I was covered in baby poop.  Nate may not have taken such an interest in photography..let alone taken the time to learn as much as he has. If we do go the kid route, I can’t guarantee that I won’t go baby crazy (have you seen how we spoil our dog?).  I feel that finding ourselves as individuals will help prevent that from happening though.  I think sometimes people get so wrapped up in their children that they forget they are human beings themselves.

Do you ever drop stuff on Nate from the top story of your house? I think you all have a balcony area right?  I do drop stuff on Nate.  Our balcony is quite handy for chucking things like cell phones and socks.  Ike gets very confused when it starts raining bones.

What rooms in your house haven't you shown us?  You can check out all of the rooms in our house in a post I wrote awhile back (check it out here!).  The post contains all rooms except for a couple of storage rooms.

What is your favorite trend right now? What decorating trend do you hate that everyone else seems to love?  I’m not much on trends.  I kind of do my own thing.  I do like stripes.  I hate buntings.  I want to set them all on fire.

How do you budget for your home improvement/decorations. Do you set funds aside just for it to use on a whim or plan & save for months before taking the plunge?  I think we have a different budget approach than a lot of people.  We keep X dollars in our savings.  Nate and I each have an allowance of X dollars which we can spend on whatever we want without asking the other.  Mine is usually house stuff.  Nate doesn’t usually spend his. Whatever is left over after our monthly payments (mortgage, electricity, etc) goes to paying off my student loans.  If my “allowance” is used up with something annoying like car tires, then I just don’t buy stuff for the house that month.  For really big purchases, we just don’t contribute as much to my student loans that month.  We don’t do that often because we want the darned things paid off.

Can you post more about your yard? I am completely clueless about the rhythm of gardening here in IA (whatdoyoumean, seasons?). Although it's been remarkably warm this week.  It has been warm.  We’ll do more yard posts this spring.  I need some motivation to tackle some outdoor projects.

You've gone thorough the process of actually building your house, but I'd love to know more about what you had to do before you picked up the hammers. The process of picking out your home, finding your lot, and what not.  This is another good blog post idea.  I’m on it.

--Do you drive your husband crazy with your constant re-decorating? My husband doesn't allow stuff like that, I have to be sneaky! Yes.  But deep down I think he likes it.  I can always tell he’s onboard with an idea if he doesn’t argue with me.  He now knows that changing things is my thing so it doesn’t really bother him any more.  I should probably verify that this information is accurate….

Is the pillow in the pic with Ike a cable knit sweater pillow? If so, where is it from? I need it!  It is.  I made it.  Read about it here

Do you have any tips for spiffing up an ugly cinder block basement?  I am totally not helpful on this one.  Sorry.  Anyone else out there?

Why do you not pack up your hubby (or leave him at home) and come visit Reno?  This may or not be from one of my favorite college friends.  The answer is actually a question.  Why are plane tickets to Reno so expensive?  If I do come out, can we go to Tahoe?

If you refuse to come visit Reno, can I move into your basement? It's walk-out so you would never have to see me......think on it. I'll wait.  Yes, if you beat my brother to it.

There you have it.  Answers to everything you could possibly want to know about us.  Let me know if you have more.  I really enjoyed reading all of your comments! Thanks for playing along…better than I would have!  Ike questions coming up later this afternoon!

Check It Out!

Holy cow.  I wasn’t expecting so many responses to yesterday’s “Let's Talk About You” post.  I forgot that I was scheduled the late shift at work last night and there was no way I was going to put together a decent post to answer all of those questions.  (I was expecting like 4 questions that I could easily slap together in a blog post.  Way to prove me wrong!)

So today I’m going to entertain you with links to some recent Décor and the Dog related posts that have shown up on other blogs.  Tomorrow is a fun giveaway but I will be back with your answers either this week-end or early next week.  Thank you all for entertaining me with your answers.  It was fun learning who’s out there.  (And from your answers, you all are a bunch of weirdos.  I didn’t say it. You did.)

First, I am guest posting over at Hyphen Interiors today.  I am sharing a big time painting failure.  It’s a never before seen/told story.  Be sure to check out how awesomely I failed at that one.  (The chair is available if you want it.  Seriously.)  Kristy is a super talented designer so be sure to check out her great posts and learn from an expert…not just someone who pretends to be.

Next….Not only were the nice folks over at Barn Light Electric nice enough to offer up a $1000 giveaway.  They also wrote a few really flattering blog posts about our lighting selections.  Their descriptions of our rooms make it sound like I almost know what I’m doing..almost.

Check out their kind words about our kitchen here

And our master bedroom here

Barn Light Electric has been such a fun company to do business with.  (If you can consider them giving me free lights and me blabbing about them business.)

***The only compensation I have received from Barn Light Electric is the shiny, beautiful lights.  I only beat this subject to the ground because I am so darn happy with how a few lighting changes have dramatically improved the look of a few of our rooms!***

And last but definitely not least, our powder room was featured over at Better After the other day.  How had I never heard of this blog??  An entire blog dedicated to before and afters.  You must go there and come back and thank me.

Happy Thursday!  Thanks again for commenting yesterday! (Feel free to keep the questions coming today if you missed out on the fun yesterday!)

Let’s Talk About You

First of all, I’m super surprised by the response to yesterday’s post.  It was my first picture less post and honestly, I was a little nervous about the whole thing.  I might break it down into a little bloggy series.  We’ll see.

I briefly mentioned yesterday that one of my favorite things about blogging is the community.  I enjoy reading your comments (and the blogs of those who comment).  I know there are more of you out there and I want to hear from you!

(I did this back in June and I liked it. And I think there are more of you out there now.  And I write this thing so I schedule the activities around these parts.  I promise I will have “real” posts again next week!)

Tell me all about yourself!

Don’t you hate when people do this?  I always blank…it’s like “tell me about yourself” block.

Here are some suggestions to help you out (but definitely don’t limit yourself to these ideas)…

About You:

  • The easy stuff: Where are you from? How old are you?  Do you have babies?  Fur or human.
  • Using a scale of 1 to 10, rate yourself on how weird you are.
  • If you could be any superhero, who would it be?
  • What do you do from 9-5?
  • If you were a cookie, what kind would you be?
  • Favorite TV show? Movie?
  • Favorite Book?  (This is selfish because I’m always looking for a good read.)
  • Favorite exercise DVD (Again, selfish reasons.  I keep forgetting this is about you.)
  • A funny story about yourself.

And………What are you dying to know about us?  Our house?  The dog? The answers to the above questions?  I’ll answer any random questions that you may have for us (well, almost any question…).  Ask away!!…or tomorrow’s “Answer All” post will be mighty boring.

I want to hear from all of you.  That includes you non-commenting lurkers, second cousins once removed, friends of friends, etc.  All of you!  I’m nosey. If you won’t do it for me, do it for this pretty face…

Now spill your guts!….

What I’ve Learned Blogging

A year ago I started this blog.  I had no clue what I was doing or what I hoped to accomplish.  Honestly, I still don’t think don’t have a clue about either of those but today I’d like to share with you tips/ideas/pointers that I have picked up over the last year.

This could get long so I highlighted the topics for easy scanning!  You may not agree with everything I have here and that’s a-okay.  I’m just sharing some of my observations from the past year.

Blogging takes time.  I had no clue the amount of time you could waste blogging.  From writing your own posts to reading others.  It usually takes me ~30 minutes to write a blog post.  Some take more time, some take less.  I usually post 5 days a week.  That’s 150 minutes each week of just writing.  (That 150 minutes doesn’t include project time, photographing time, etc.)  I try to write most of my posts on Sundays (our lazy day).  Writing on the week-end frees up my week to go to that pesky 9-5 job and fulfill my other life duties…like cleaning the bathroom and having real life friends.

Commenting.  Do you like comments?  Me too.  I’m a comment whore.  (Can I type that here?  Sure.  It’s my blog.  Mwahahaha.)  I’d guess that 99.999% of bloggers like comments.  All bloggers like knowing that people are reading what they are putting out there.  Why else would you blog?  Posting things that you don’t want anyone to read is called journaling.  Big difference.  If you want people to comment on your blog, you need to comment on others.  I personally like reading other blogs so commenting is no big deal.  Do you want to grow your blog?  Other bloggers are going to help you out along the way!

I also try very hard to go through my comments each day and read the blogs of those who comment here.  If you are going to take the time to read my nonsense, I think it’s respectful for me to do the same.  I’ve found some great blogs by doing this!  I don’t always have the time but this is something that I try really hard to do.

Find your niche.  I did a lot of Googling last winter when I started this thing.  A lot of the tips about blogging said to “find your niche”…that group of bloggers that is similar to you.  Great.  Super. But how do I do that?  Who are they and where are they?

I started with the bigger blogs that I related to (Young House Love, Nuestra Vida Dulce, etc) and clicked on their comments.  I then read through the blogs of their commenters.  Slowly I found bloggers similar to myself…20/30 somethings fixing up their homes.  I’d comment on their posts and they’d comment on mine.  I refer to them as my blog buddies.  You learn a lot about people who write about their lives multiple times per week.

Who’s in my niche?  Go through my comments.  The same names pop up every day.  Your niche won’t form over night but give it time!

Content.  I feel like this often gets left out of the “I want to grow my blog but don’t know how.” posts.  To me, content is the most important tool to growing your blog.  You can have the fanciest blog design and all of the money in the world but I’m not going to read your blog if your posts are crap.  The end.

What is good content?  I think good content comes from being passionate about something.  Posting what you truly love.  Posting about your hobbies and what makes your life unique.

It’s best to have pretty photos of things you are blogging about.  Do you need a super fancy camera? No. A point and shoot will get you there. Do you need Photoshop? No.  Picnik is a free, easier to use version.

Be yourself.  I think half of you read this blog because of my lack of filter.  I like that.  I get irritated when bloggers try to imitate other bloggers.  I mean, I get it.  If it works for them, maybe it will work for me.  Unfortunately, I don’t think it will.  Be yourself.  Tell me what you like.  Tell me what you don’t like.  Be sincere.  I don’t write things like “Awww, shucks.  You all are too kind.  I’m tickled pink.”  That’s not me.  Phrases like those annoy me.  If they are you, that’s awesome.  Write them.  If you wouldn’t tell your best friend “Holla at a girlfriend” then don’t write it.

Link Parties are your friend.  A common question I had early on was “Why is no one reading my blog?”.  Because no one know it exists.  (And your posts are crap…go back.  It’s funny.)  You have to put yourself out there.  Link parties are one of the best tools to accomplish this.  You post the link to your blog post, others read it.  Go through the other link party submissions and comment on their posts.  Cross your fingers that you have a great project and the host of the party features it.

Social Media is fun.  Have you checked out my facebook page?  It’s kind of lame but it’s there.  Do you follow me on the twitter?  Social media is a great way to share what your blogging about.  It’s also a great way to find out what’s happening in blogland (it really is it’s own little land).

Google Reader is a must.  Do you know about Google Reader?  Organize yours now.  You will thank me.  Why?  You now have about 1 million and 12 blogs that you want to get through on a regular basis.  Instead of typing in each and every web address…you just keep on clicking through your Google Reader.    I have my Google Reader organized by primary (my favorites), secondary (those next in line), tertiary (mainly just read these when I have extra time), and link party sites. Organization is key to managing your blogging time.

Windows Live Writer is super helpful.  I use Blogger.  I really like Blogger.  I know nothing about html coding.  Blogger does it for me.  Blogger’s downfall?  It takes FOREVER to load photos.  It’s super quick and easy in Live Writer.  The download is available for free on-line.  Fancy.

How much money have you spent growing your blog?  $5 for on-line photo storage.  That is it.  I think it’s easy to get trapped into thinking that you need to spend $100 on a fancy blog design and multiple hundreds on blogging courses.  Not true. Google is your friend.  Blogger is your friend.  Writing about what you love is your friend.

Some of you may argue that I spend money on projects for the blog.  That is true but these are projects that I would do if I didn’t have a blog.  I would decorate my home and tackle sewing projects even if I wasn’t blabbing about it.  I did all of this before I started blogging.

How much money do you make blogging?  This is a question I had early on.  One I could not find an answer to.  No one likes to talk how much money they make but this isn’t how I make my living.  If it was, I’d be in trouble. Big trouble.  Will I tell you my day job salary?  Heck no.  Will I tell you what I make blogging?  Sure.

I make ~$50 each month from BlogHer ads.  Some months more, some months less.  (This goes back to content.  The better the content, the more people read.  The more people read, the more money I make.) Having said that, I don’t try to make money here.  I have the ads because it doesn’t make sense not to.  I installed the code once and that’s all I have to do to receive a check each month.  No brainer.

I have, however, received a bunch of free things over this past year from this blog.  I like free things.  I’m not going to lie.  I didn’t realize how much free stuff there was out there for bloggers.  Again, not enough for me to quit my job and stay home in my pajamas all day but not too shabby for a hobby.  I’ll take it!

Do you have other questions?  I’d love to answer them! I’m obviously not holding back this week…wowsers…

Snowflake Art

Our kitchen is lacking something.  A lovely backsplash.  We can’t make a tile decision to save our lives so we leave it as is and I fill the empty space with pretty art.

I wanted something a little festive to hang out behind our stove…

165pn

I decided on snowflake art!  Snowflakes are great because they last through the winter months.  Who wants to go through lots of DIY work for two weeks worth of fun?

162pn

The process to make this snowflake art is very similar to the gift I made for my brother.  (You can read about that here..unless you are my brother.)

  • Purchase a 2x2 sheet of plywood.
  • Make your significant other cut it down to size. (Ours was 22” square.)
    • You could do this yourself.  Just don’t tell my husband.
  • Paint the board a background color. (White for our piece.)  Let dry.
  • Borrow your mom’s Cricut to cut out a bunch of snowflakes.
    • I imagine you could also cut your very own.
  • Spray back of snowflakes with craft spray adhesive.
  • Apply snowflakes to painted board.  Press down edges well.
  • Use spray paint to cover board and silhouette (Black for our piece.)
  • Let dry.
  • Remove snowflakes.
  • Beg your significant other to cut a frame out of leftover colonial molding from your recent powder room make-over.  Use wood glue to apply the frame to the painted board.
  • Fill in corners and paint the frame.
  • Enjoy your lovely new snowflake masterpiece.

On a completely unrelated note, tomorrow is Décor and the Dog’s first birthday.  I love a good birthday so consider it a celebration.  There will be lots of wisdom sharing (from you and me) and a giveaway!

Happy Birthday dear little blog!

Deck the Living Room

Let’s end the week with the last part of our holiday house tour!  (Check out our dining room and mudroom if you missed them!)

Our living room is looking might festive.  Don’t you think?

010

I think there is a fine line between decorating for Christmas and your house throwing up Christmas.  I don’t know that throwing up is wrong.  It’s just a fine line.  Both Nate and I dislike clutter so we try to keep the Christmas items to a minimum…but we still want the house to feel cozy and festive.  Make sense?

Our tree is artificial.  We’re too lazy and cheap for a real one.  This tree is 12 feet tall.  We both wanted a giant tree for our two story living room.  We bought this during an after Christmas sale.  It’s not pre-lit.  Way to go cheap selves.  I cringe every time Nate stands on his tip toes on a ladder to add the star.  If it was up to me, only the bottom third of this tree would be lit.  I’m glad Nate isn’t afraid of heights!

You will also notice the lack of presents under the tree.  We like to decorate early but shop a little later.  It’s good to spread out the holiday to-do list.

Here are a few other holiday views of our first floor.  I can only wish that the sun will shine again someday here in Iowa so we could have some well lit pictures!

Is your house all decked out?  Does it throw up Christmas or do you not have nearly enough decorations?

Check back Sunday night for a DIY holiday project.  And next week is my one year blogiversary.  Big stuff!

Holly Jolly Dining Room

The holiday tour of our house continues in the dining room. (Check out our mudroom and mantel if you missed them!)

We have a major red theme going on in the rest of the house but I also really like blue/silver for Christmas.  Lucky for me, blue/silver works well in our formal dining room.

image

I wish there was a way to make Christmas lights look awesome during the day.  That will be how I make my millions.  Don’t steal my idea.  I have to work today so I can’t apply for my patent.

I’m not going to lie.  This room is mainly for looks.  It’s the first room you see as you walk in the front door.  We’re not formal people.  Some day I’ll make it useful.  Until then, it’s a good place for 1 of our 2 trees…

066

And our hutch….

070

I’d fire my photographer for taking crooked pictures…but then I’d have to take them myself.

159

That’s our dining room all decked out in blue and silver!

Do you have a formal dining room? Do you use it?  What’s your holiday color scheme this year?

Festive Mudroom

Yesterday I showed you our mantel.  Today you will get to see our mudroom’s holiday getup.

I got creative with the chalkboard.  And by creative, I mean I borrowed another idea from Pinterest.

094

The bench area received a few holiday touches as well…

097

I love my vintage egg basket for storing gloves/hats/scarves.  Ike likes the easy access to them when he’s bored and wants to cause trouble. Not that he ever gets in trouble.

098

I purchased the two nutcrackers from Hobby Lobby last year.  I originally spray painted them cream but decided they were a better fit for our mudroom this year.  Nothing a little red spray paint can’t fix.  I have a problem.

I have seen similar nutcrackers from West Elm costing at least $20 a piece.  These were $3 each.  Spray paint is $3.  Win.

I replaced two of the frames with some snow art that I whipped up in Photoshop and Word.  Fancy.

099

100

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.  Is it snowing where you’re at?  I really want it to snow.  Just for December.  Then I want it to be 80.  The end.

Holiday Mantel

Today starts the holiday tour of our home!  Get excited!  Because I am.

We’re going to start with our mantel!

I wasn’t much into mantel decorating until recently.  Now it’s a fun game.

I have the challenge of the television above the mantel.  I love my television so I’m going to work with it.  And turn it into a double fire.  Amazing.  (That was all Nate.  He’s good.)

I wanted to keep things simple as to not distract from my Elf watching.  The mantel set the tone for this year’s wood/red theme.

I purchased the two wood trees and stock holders from Hobby Lobby (50% off, of course).  The two deer were Salvation Army finds. The white deer had a hideous red and green ribbon around it’s neck.  Nothing a little burlap couldn’t fix.

This is the first year that we’ve hung stockings.  I could never find stockings that I liked.  I should clarify…stockings that I liked that weren’t 1 million dollars.  I whipped these darlings up on my own.  **Pats self on back.**

And to clarify. The third stocking is for the dog.  Sorry to disappoint but the furry dude needs a stocking too.  Where else would Santa put his bones?

There you have it.  Our 2011 mantel.  Check back tomorrow as the tour continues!

What’s your mantel looking like this year? Do you hang stockings? What’s your favorite stocking stuffer (to give or receive)?  Do you have a stocking for your pet?  Who’s digging my flannel pants? (Look hard at the last photo.)
